Commission Works Auditions - A Midsummer Night's Dream

This opportunity is for students planning to attend the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska in June 2019.

Video Auditions for A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Area 51, or Dreamland
Music and book by Chris Miller, lyrics and book by Nathan Tysen

The music of this Midsummer adaptation is standard contemporary musical theatre, drawing from current show choir trends that wouldn’t be out of place on Glee (even though Glee’s been cancelled for a couple years, show choirs are forever), while also giving a Sara Bareilles-type pop realness, country, folk, lounge-jazz, surfer-rock, and maybe even some rap.

Those Thespians auditioning should prepare both classic and contemporary musical theatre pieces, which can be up to 32-bar cuts. We have deliberately left out voice types, if someone fits the character description, we’ll modify and write to the student cast! Also, any type or ethnicity is encouraged to audition for any role. In this video audition, we are primarily interested in pre-casting the roles of Snyder, Rebecca, Eliot, Randy, Aurora, Titania, Oberon, and Puck.

MELISSA LILLY: reporter for Channel 9 news in Las Vegas; excellent in front of the camera and a force to be reckoned with away from it; creeped out by all things extraterrestrial.
GEN. RASMUSSEN: lieutenant colonel of the Air Force and government liaison; imposing but gregarious and convinced his facility has nothing to hide.
MRS. MUNOZ: principal of Las Vegas Prep School, a bit jumpy as she is the only chaperone for the weekend; mother of Rebecca.
SNYDER: the last of a long line of janitors at Area 51; he is chock-full of Area 51 lore and once had dreams of being an actor.

REBECCA: an aeronautics buff who can identify any kind of aircraft and plans on one day to be flying for the Air Force; leader of the honor students and daughter of Mrs. Munoz.
ELIOT: lover of all things meteorological who dreams of one day being a TV weatherman and going on a date with Rebecca.
RANDY: lover of chemistry, biology, and Rebecca; has a way with words.
AURORA: a studier of the stars both astronomical and astrological; is a secret conspiracy theorist who believes in alien life; a bit aloof but interested in a relationship with ANYONE.

SHOW CHOIR: New Dawn is the Las Vegas Prep School high school show choir, comprised of energetic, eager, and mostly talented teen triple threats.
QUINN: the student director-choreographer-arranger-composer-lyricist of New Dawn.
SCOTT: the fool.

ALIENS: a group of extraterrestrials who have been stranded on Earth for 50 years.
OBERON: co-captain of the alien expedition, determined to return home.
PUCK: the youngest member of the expedition, a troublemaker.
